The Class of 1976 has created a unique project to memorialize the deceased members of their class. During Homecoming Weekend they held their 1st Annual Car Show at Cushman Park as a fundraiser for the effort.
The Class of 1976 has 39 deceased members and their classmates have raised the $3,900 necessary to purchase a memorial brick in the Memorial Brick Park behind F.H.S. for each of the "Angels of '76".
Mission Accomplished…so far! As of June 24, 2017, the deceased classmates have their names placed in the Fairhaven High Memorial Brick Park. Over the last three years the Angels of ’76 Council has manned booths at The Olde Tyme Fairhaven Holiday Festival and Blessing of the Hot Rods fundraisers as well as individual donations received. The fundraising efforts have been very successful and the Class of 1976 now has the largest footprint of engraved bricks in any one area in the Memorial Brick Park.
The Class of ’76 is now turning its' creative talents to acquiring the necessary funds to ensure that every classmate will have a brick in the park eventually. This undertaking will take several years, as the projected amount to accomplish this task will total about $22,500.00, keeping with current brick prices. Fundraising events such like the "Blessing of the Hot Rods” will continue to be held at Cushman Park in the center of Fairhaven, hopefully bringing in much needed revenue to achieve the Angel’s goal. The Blessing of Hot Rods charges $10 per vehicle entry. There is no entrance fee or admission fee for visitors but donations during the event are certainly welcome. John Sharples has renovated one of our old desks from the school as a Reflection Desk where one can sit, remember our deceased classmates, and hopefully leave a donation. There are trophies awarded for the top three classic cars and musical entertainment is provided throughout the event. This year’s event included 30 vehicles in a wide range of categories. Plans for next year's “Blessing of the Hot Rods” are under way so plan on next year's Homecoming Sunday if the weather permits.
