Ryan Baldwin played two years of high school basketball because he enjoyed the sport. But it was the way he played the sports of football and baseball that enabled Ryan to leave his legacy in Fairhaven athletics.
Giving up basketball to focus on football and baseball in his junior and senior years, Baldwin quickly turned solid efforts into all-star performances. He capped his football career with an eye-opening senior season that saw the 6’ 2”, 212-pound two-way lineman earn The Standard-Times Defensive Player of the Year award by leading the Blue Devils in tackles with 117 to help Fairhaven rebound from an 0-10 season the year before and finish 7-3 in 2012.
When he wasn’t stopping opposing running backs at the line of scrimmage or sacking enemy quarterbacks, Ryan divided his time between opening running lanes for his own backs from his offensive guard position, punting and kicking off.
But as eye-opening as Baldwin was on the gridiron, he was eyepopping on the baseball diamond. As a hitter, he was a natural and defensively he played a variety of positions including first base, third base, shortstop and the outfield in his memorable senior year of 2013.
The righthand throwing, left-hand swinging Baldwin hit a hard .500 with eight home runs and drove in 34 runs while compiling a slugging percentage of 1.000. When he wasn’t playing a fielding position, Baldwin pitched, and in 50 innings of work, he struck out 65 batters and fashioned an earned run average of 0.98 on his way to being named a South Coast Conference All-Star for the third straight year and winning distinction as the SCC and Standard-Times Player of the Year, both by a unanimous vote. The Boston Globe and Boston Herald also named him to their All-State Teams.
Baldwin’s memorable season earned him a full baseball scholarship to D-2 Barry University in Miami, Florida where, after red-shirting in 2014, he com-piled a brilliant college resume, finishing his career tied for the most home runs in school history with 34 and ranked fourth in career RBI with 159. His career batting average was .333 with a career slugging percentage of .533.
As a senior in 2018, Baldwin tied for the team lead in home runs with 11 and RBI with 45, was third in slugging percentage (.542), fourth in batting average (.296) and his home runs ranked 12th in the Sunshine State Conference. Ryan’s other achievements included being named Sunshine State Conference Fresh-man of the Year; Honorable Mention All-America by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and First Team All-South Region selection. He graduated from Barry University in 2018 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance as well as a MBA.
Ryan becomes the third member of the Baldwin family to become a member of the Fairhaven High School Hall of Fame. His father (Bob) andsister (Erin) have been previously inducted.
Ryan lives in Dartmouth with his wife Jen and their two children, Maeve (2) and James (1). He is employed by the Acushnet Company (Titleist) in Fairhaven where he works on their Financial Planning Team.
