1949-1950 CLASS B TECH TOURNEY & NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONS
The athletic history of Fairhaven High School is dominated by basketball, and the 1949-50 team consisting of Norris Drew, George Graves, John Hennessy, Bart Leach, Dick Norman, and Lou Shurtleff and Coach Mel Entin is perhaps its greatest story.
A sparkling 25-0 season capped by a Class B Tech Tournament championship (with a 63-43 win over Belmont) and a New England Class B championship (with a come-from-behind 47-44 win over Westerly, Rhode Island) gave Fairhaven the top headlines of the time and brought the tiny coastal town fame and recognition throughout Massachusetts and New England.
The team's 1949-50 schedule was that of an "independent" with games against New Bedford, Holy Family, Dartmouth, New Bedford Voke, St. Anthony, Taunton, Coyle, North Hampton, and Wareham, due to the fact that no league accepted Fairhaven, and not many wanted to face Entin's cagers.
Marblehead, Milton and Belmont were were their opponents in their run through the Class B Tech Tournament. Scores of 55-30 vs Marblehead, 53-37 vs Milton, and the 63-43 win over Belmont provided proof that the Blue were a team of destiny.
The New England Championship game against Westerly, RI saw the Blue trailing by ten with less than twelve minutes to play, but the Entin-men were not to be denied as the Blue took charge and surged to a six point lead with :28 remaining.
The rest is history!
