Charles "Al" Braley

Al Braley was a versatile, all-around athlete at Fairhaven High School who was awarded the Sparrow Cup in 1948 as the most outstanding male athlete in the senior class.

He was a member of the basketball teams for five years and a starter on the 1946-47 and 1947-48 teams. In baseball he was a standout catcher in '47 and '48, batting over .300 both seasons, and in 1947 was the center on the football team.

Al entered the Marine Corps in 1952 and served for 26 years, including 12 as an Officer. He served combat duty in Korea (1953) and as Press Chief, U.S. Command in Vietnam (1965-66). As an officer he was Base Athletic Director, Quantico, VA, and the Marine Aircraft Wing Information Officer in Vietnam in 1970. He headed the Marine Corps News Bureau for five years and the Quantico Information Office until his retirement in 1978.

Al has been a successful referee for 38 years, working over 7,300 games; 78 state and regional playoff games and eight Maryland State High School Championship games in basketball, football, and baseball.
