Inducted into Hall of Fame: 2004
Hall of Fame Category: Athlete

During his years at Fairhaven, Ray played three sports: football, basketball, and baseball. He was a letter winner in basketball and baseball.

A year after playing on a winless basketball squad, Ray played a key role in helping Fairhaven qualify for the annual Class B competition in the M.I.T. Tournament and earn its first ever trip to Boston Garden. It was his heroics that paved the way for a tournament win. Fairhaven was the only team from Southeastern Mass to get to the semi-finals that year.

Playing both the forward and guard positions, Ray was often the team's high scorer. Although his hustle on defense earned him his nickname, he was known for his play-making ability on offense.

In baseball, Ray was an outstanding catcher and pitcher and was invited co Florida for a minor league tryout with the Cleveland Indians in 1950.

Ray was also a very accomplished musician. He played in both the school band and was the first chair trumpet player in the orchestra. In 1947 he was among three area students to receive a music scholarship from Florida Southern College. Ray went on to play trumpet for the U.S. 320lh Army band while in the military and has appeared in several orchestras.

Ray played semi-pro baseball and basketball for the Livesey Club and the Fairhaven Varsity Club. He played semi-pro football for the Dartmouth Hornets in 1949 and semi-pro baseball for the Army-Navy Hospital from 1946-47.

Probably best known locally for his 31 years as an ASA softball umpire, Ray has also been President of the Fairhaven Little League baseball, coached C.Y.O. basketball, Boy's Club basketball, Varsity Club basketball and Girl's recreation league basketball.
