Carleton Fielding played football, baseball, golf, and ran track while at FHS. He was a "five-star" athlete.
Called "Swede" by his classmates, Carleton was the "Most Valuable Player" on his 1941 football team and the winner of the Sparrow Cup in 1941. On the gridiron Carleton played the guard position on the offensive line for four years and was on the mythical All-Bristol County Football Team his senior season.
Upon graduation from FHS Carleton joined the U.S. Navy and was a crew-man on the USS Grayback (SS-208). The Grayback was returning from her tenth war patrol on 27 February 1944 when she was sunk by a direct hit by Japanese carrierĀ based aircraft. She was "lost at sea" with her crew of 80, including twenty year old F2 Carleton F. Fielding.
Carleton will be forever remembered as one who gave his life so that we
could forever be free. "No love is greater than the one a person gives for his country".
