Michael "Mike" Fitzgerald was an outstanding athlete in the Class of 1962. In Baseball and Basketball he was first team All-Bristol County in his sophomore, junior and senior years. He was a pitcher and excellent batter on the FHS baseball team, batting .331 for his three years and compiling a record of 19 wins and 4 losses. His teams went to the state tournament each of the three years that he played.
In basketball Mike captained the basketball team and often led them in scoring, amassing 1,246 points over his three years. He led Bristol County in scoring in each of those seasons. He was selected to the first team Eastern Mass. All-State Team in his senior season (1961-62). Fairhaven teams qualified for the Tech Tournament each of those three seasons and in 1960 advanced to the semi-finals. He was also selected as the Southeastern Massachusetts outstanding player in his senior season.
A Harvard Book Club recipient (1962), Mike was a member of the Honor Society for three years and Key club for two. Mike went to URI after his high school graduation where he was a starter on the basketball team.
