John "Greenie" Freitas

John A. Freitas, a 1929 graduate of Fairhaven High School, was a 12-letter man. Also known as "Greenie", he was awarded the Sparrow Cup for highest distinction in sports. He won letters in football, basketball, and baseball, shining primarily in football.

He graduated from Huntington Prep School in 1930 and Boston College in 1934, where Johnny was named All-American in football in 1933. In 1982, Johnny was inducted into the Boston College Eagle Hall of Fame.

John became the first athletic director and coach at Holy Family High School 1934-36 before moving on to a teacher-coach position at Hartford High School, White River Junction, Vermont. In 1943, he became principal and in 1953 he advanced to the position of Superintendent of Schools.

A monument was erected in John's honor at the Hartford Vocational Center after his death in 1975. It reads: "The friends of this community dedicate these premises as the John A. Freitas Educational Complex. May this memorial stand in appreciation of his 39 years of service as teacher, coach, educational leader, citizen, and friend."
