It was said that Vern Gomes was perhaps the most "natural" athlete to have played at Fairhaven High School. Whether it was football, basketball, or later in life, golf or bowling, Vern "could do it all". But, it was as a basketball players that Vern made his mark at FHS. Cut as a 5' 4', 105 pound sophomore, Vern came back as a junior and senior to have one of the most storied basketball athletic careers at Fairhaven High School. He relied on his quickness and his outside shooting to carry him.
His 1950-51 basketball team lost but one game and won both Massachusetts and New England Championships with Vern at the point, engineering the offense. He was honored with a spot on the Tech All-Tournament team in his junior season, and second team All-Bristol County in 1951. In his senior year he was chosen as All-Bristol County.
Vern went on to become an outstanding quarterback for the Fairhaven Varsity Club Football Team. Today an award is given in his name to the outstanding FHS basketball player each season.
