Bob Gonet played bigger than his actual size. Called the "mini-pivot" on Wayne Wilson's 1978-79 SMC Division I 12-8 basketball squad, Bob was selected as "Player of the Week" by the New Bedford Standard-Times on three occasions in his senior season. In addition, the 5' 11" center was selected as "Athlete of the Month" by the Greater New Bedford SPORTS Magazine. Bob was selected by the Standard-Times as well as the Taunton Daily Gazette as an All-Star in 1978-1979. His career high in scoring came against Taunton when he poured in 37 points, all from within 12 feet of the basket.
Bob also played tennis, serving as the number 1 Singles player in his senior year where he had a won/loss record of 15-5.
Gonet went on to UMass-Dartmouth where he starred on the basketĀball court, earning honors as the defensive player and rebounder of the year for two seasons and he is among the top ten scorers in the school's history with a career mark of 1,230 points.
Hard work, hustle, and intelligence were his trademarks!
