Hall of Fame Category: Athlete

Nathaniel "Nat" Guy was an outstanding athlete in the Class of 1937. He was a member of the basketball, baseball, and tennis teams while a student at FHS.

In 1936-37 Nat was a top performer on the basketball team, leading the Blue to a victory over Stoughton to help his team reach the Class A quarterfinals. A dramatic two-point victory over New Bedford High School was said to be "the most startling upset Bristol County basketball has known in many years". Guy had entered the game as the leading scorer in Bristol County and was noted as an outstanding performer for the Blue in that memorable competition.

However, it was tennis that was Guy's true passion. From the early days at FHS to decades later on the city courts throughout New Bedford, Guy would dominate the sports pages with his championship play in both singles and doubles competitions. He held top ranks in Senior Doubles in New England with numerous partners and represented the United States in team competition against Canada in the Friendship Cup Matches.

His style of play, developed on the courts of Fairhaven High School was one of a strong service, aggressive net play, and a dominating overhead smash.

Nat Guy was a fierce competitor both on and off the court. His contributions to FHS tennis and tennis in Southeastern Massachusetts were well known.
