Anthony "Jep" Lopes was an all-around athlete for Fairhaven High. He co-captained and quarterbacked the football team. His 1944 football team beat rival New Bedford 12-7. He was captain of the first FHS basketball team to be invited to the State Tournament (1945) and was named to the All-State Class B team the same year. Jep also played third base for the baseball team.

Jep was awarded the Sparrow Cup in 1945, the same year that he captained both the basketball and football teams. In addition, he was selected "All-Bristol County" in football and basketball. He was the FHS MVP in football and basketball in his senior year at FHS.

After high school he played semi-pro ball for the Fairhaven Varsity Club, Cape Verdeans, and Morse Twist Drill teams.
