In 1928 Harold "Mac" Macomber was voted "Best Athlete" by his classmates. Mac was a five year football player, four year basketball player, four year track athlete and three year baseball player at Fairhaven High School, lettering in all. He excelled at each sport, but perhaps was best known for his skills on the Gridiron. His yearbook asks, "We wonder what made "Mac" decide to exchange his football uniform for a diploma?
Mac was also President of his class in his senior year. Mac became a Firefighter for his town and eventually was appointed Chief. Mac passed away in the line of duty in 1970. Mac also served as a member of the School Committee.
The Harold S. Macomber, Jr. Football Trophy, named in his honor, is given annually to the Outstanding Football Player of Fairhaven High School. In addition, Route 240 is named the Harold S. Macomber, Jr. Highway.
