A basketball captain (64-65) and four year baseball player al Fairhaven High School, John was All-Bristol County in basketball and baseball in the 1965-65 seasons. John received the Bob Cousy Rotary Scholarship to attend Cousy's Camp Graylag Basketball Camp (one of only two from the Greater New Bedford area).
John went on to star in baseball at Springfield College where he held a 12-1 record over four years. In his senior year he helped his team to a 27-7 record, the best in school history. He was ranked fifth in the nation and was signed to a major league contract with the Red Sox organization in 1969.
After his tragic death, a scholarship was set up in North Conway, New Hampshire to preserve his memory and contribution to "life in the Mt. Washington Valley".
He is remembered by the following:
"THE QUALITY OF A MAN'S LIFE IS MEASURED BY HOW DEEPLY HE HAS TOUCHED THE LIVES OF OTHERS"
