Bob may still hold the single season record for strike outs in a single game. One day in 1948, he mowed down 22 of the opposition players via the "K".
A standout in baseball and basketball, Bob Mathieson played each for the Fairhaven Blue from 1946-1948, earning varsity letters in each of those years. In 1947, and again in 1948, he was selected All County for baseball, and in 1948, he was a member of the All County basketball team. His three year record as a FHS pitcher was 17 - 7. In that 1948 season his strikeout total reached 147.
In 1948, he was signed by the Boston Braves. He was later purchased by the Washington Senators in 1950 and then by the Milwaukee Braves in 1953. In his ten year minor league career he compiled a 91-43 record, with the 1950 season his best with a record of 24-7 and an ERA of 3.10. In 1953, he was the Western League ERA champion with a record of 15-8 and an ERA of 1.46.
