All Bristol County shortstop, 1960: All-Bristol County Basketball, guard, 1960: 4-year letterman in tennis, undefeated in 1960, on an undefeated team that was runner-up in the State Tournament, is it any wonder that, to many, Tom Mendell was one of the most versatile athletes that ever played at FHS?
In 1960 Tom held a .345 batting average, averaged 14 points/game in basketball (17 points/game during the Tech Tourney in which Fairhaven advanced to the semi-finals), and was awarded the Sparrow Cup as the most athletic Senior and the Touchdown Club Award as the best all around athlete in the Greater New Bedford area.
Tom went on to play tennis at UMass-Arnherst where he was the Yankee Conference champion in #1 doubles and #3 singles in 1962 and in 1963-64 lettered in basketball and tennis at NB Tech (UMassĀ Dartmouth).
Tom was the Director of Recreation for the town of Fairhaven from 1970-80 and a teacher in the public schools.
