Johnny Silva lettered in baseball, football, basketball, and track during his varsity career at Fairhaven High School.
His most memorable year and biggest thrill came in 1937 when, before 4,500 fans, Fairhaven scored an 8-7 football victory over New Bedford ending a five year drought. The win highlighted a 6-1-1 season in which the Blue also defeated Durfee 7-0.
Johnny was also the starting pitcher on the Fairhaven Baseball team.
In the fall of his senior year Johnny was All Bristol County in football and was named to the Standard Times All-Star Team. He earned All Bristol County honors in basketball as the first team guard and was awarded the Sparrow Athletic Trophy as Fairhaven High School premier athlete in 1938. John also played football with the Fairhaven Varsity Club and basketĀball with the Cape Verdean Whalers.
