Augustine "Gus" Silveira, Jr. graduated from Fairhaven High School in 1952, and went on to further his studies at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst under the 4-college program (U. Mass, Amherst, Smith, and Mt. Holyoke). From 1957-1962 Dr. Silveira worked as a research chemist for the Acushnet Process Co. In 1963, Dr. Silveira became Associate Professor at SUNY Oswego; from 1967 to the present, he has been the Chairperson of the Department of Chemistry.

Later, in 1973, UMass-Dartmouth awarded him the Personal Achievement Award and, in 1975, conferred upon him an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree. In 1976, he was appointed to the rank of Distinguished Teaching Professor, the highest rank in the State University of New York. At SUNY, Oswego, in 1983 he was the first recipient of the President's Award "in recognition of outstanding scholarship through significant contributions to research".

Dr. Silveira's work has been published extensively in national and international chemistry journals and he has been invited to give talks at Colleges and Universities throughout the world. He has been the recipient of over fifty grants and awards and he and his students have pioneered nationally in project oriented laboratories.
