Doug was an outstanding athlete in the class of 1941. He lettered in basketball, golf and track. He was a fierce competitor in basketball and had an undefeated year in his golf matches with his partner Carlton Fielding. In track and field Doug excelled in four events: I00 and 440 yard dash, pole vault and long jump. He was awarded the Whitworth Trophy for Excellence in Track as the most valuable track athlete in 1941. In the 1941 South Shore Interscholastic Track Meet Doug placed first in the pole vault, second in the long jump, and third in the 440 yard dash.
After high school Doug played football for the Fairhaven Varsity Club and was considered one of the best defensive ends in the Southeastern SemiĀ Pro League.
Under the watchful eye of his father, the late Howard Stevens, golf pro at the Reservation Golf Club, Doug became a legend at the course. In the 1980's he and teammate Joe Kobak won the senior tournament. The highlight of his golf career came in 1990 when he won the Reservation Days Tournament with his good friend Barry Higham.
