Ed Sylvia was a four-sport athlete at Fairhaven. As a halfback in football, guard in basketball, shortstop in baseball and tennis player Ed earned ten Varsity letters.

In 1955 he was Captain of the basketball team and was selected the teams "Most Valuable Player". He was the recipient of the Sparrow Cup in 1955, as the most outstanding male athlete in his class.

In 1955 Ed was selected to the Standard Times "All-Bristol County" All-star Team in basketball and baseball. He was President of his junior class and a member of the Key Club and Traffic Squad.

Ed went on to play basketball and soccer at the New Bedford Institute of Technology, from which he graduated with a degree in textiles.
