Dutch was an outstanding athlete in the class of 1923, lettering in football and track. He captained the undefeated '22 team to a Bristol County League Championship and was described by the Standard Times as a "sturdy, line-plunging back...(who) probably has done more actual work this season than any other backfield man. Captain Dutch Tunstall piloted the 1922 squad through the most successful season on the school's history."
A hard-running back, Tunstall was selected to the All-Bristol County team in both 1921 and 1922. As a defensive player, Tunstall had "no peer... (at) his defensive station at end where his smart, hard tackling has made the running of Fairhaven's ends anything but a simple task."
In addition to his skill on the gridiron, Dutch was a standout in track and field, placing third in the broad jump at 18'6" in the New England Interscholastic Track Meet and fourth in the State Track Meet in Boston at 19' 5".
