Gil played three sports while at Fairhaven High School: football, basketball, and baseball, lettering in each.
In football he played fullback and linebacker and served as the team's captain in his senior season. He was selected as a Boston Globe All-State Honorable Mention.
As a guard on the basketball team Gil led his mates to a 20-0 1966-67 Capeway Conference championship and in the 1967-68 season the team repeated as conference champions with an undefeated conference record.
On the diamond, Gil pitched and played third base. He was named to the AllĀ Suburban team by the Standard Times in both his junior and senior seasons. As a pitcher in his senior year he threw a no hit game, a one hit game and two games in which he allowed only two hits. His ERA hovered around the 1.00 mark.
His 1968 classmates voted him "most athletic" and he was offered scholarships for both baseball and basketball. He chose baseball and played at Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, FL.
Gil returned to Fairhaven and coached basketball for four years - two as an assistant to Wayne Wilson and two as head coach of the Blue Devils.
Gil was the founder, editor, and publisher of The Advocate, Fairhaven's homeĀ town newspaper.
