Hall of Fame Category: Athlete

Al Whitworth was a pioneer. He set pole vault records at a time when vaulting was not a premiere event.

Al was an FHS track team member in his '28, '29 and '30 school years and captain in '29 and '30. In his 1930 season he was the New England (high school) pole vault champion and the Bristol County record holder at 12'4".

His first vaults came at the age of nine in his back yard over his mother's clothesline and by the time he entered Fairhaven high School he was easily clearing IO feet. By the end of his sophomore year he was the Bristol County (IO' 4") and New England Meet record holder (11'5 3/8"). By his senior season his vaulting and records improved.

Al went on to the University of Pennsylvania where he was the captain of the 1934-35 track team.

At Fairhaven High School Al also played football in 1928 and 1929 and was a standout offensive guard on the 1929 championship team.

In 1930 he was presented the Whitworth Trophy, symbolic of the outstanding trackman at FHS.

He was Vice-President of his class in 1929 and Secretary in 1930 and a member of the Varsity Club, 1928-1930.
