A distance runner for the Fairhaven Blue Devils, John placed second indoors in the Bristol-County League Championship meet in the mile run and fourth indoors at the Boston Garden. He went on to win the outdoor Class D championship at two miles and placed second in the All-State meet in the event. His success continued at the state level giving him another Class D two mile championship at White Stadium in Boston and an All-State fourth place finish. He was again selected by the Standard Times as All-Scholastic. John held the Fairhaven High School record for the two-mile from 1963- 1988.
